These two belong together: the command, “Do not fear,” and the promise, “I will be with you.” “Do not be afraid, for I am with you” Gen 26.24.
We dare not see the soul behind the face,
Lest fear be met and love find greater place.
To fear the Lord means to be obsessed with him, in the best possible sense—to have him as the center of being, as the point of reference for every thought, word, and action. “Fear the Lord and turn away from evil” Prov 3.7b.
